Key points

  • UPS charges DAS per package to 25,778 listed ZIP codes, in three tiers: standard, Extended and Remote.
  • In 2026, DAS is $4.50 commercial and $6.55 residential. From December 21, 2026, it's $4.90 and $7.15.
  • Extended is the biggest tier, with 14,275 ZIP codes, and costs $8.85 per residential package in 2026.
  • You can check any ZIP in UPS's free Excel listing. Drop leading zeros before you search.
  • DAS stacks with the residential surcharge, and UPS adds fuel on top of both.
  • UPS Simple Rate is exempt from standard and Extended DAS.

What Is the UPS Delivery Area Surcharge?

The UPS delivery area surcharge is a flat fee per package for ZIP codes UPS rates as costly to reach. It runs $4.50 to $8.85 in 2026.

UPS charges it because some routes cost more per stop. A driver covering a rural route may travel miles between deliveries, while a city route can drop dozens of parcels on one street.

  • It depends on the ZIP code. The destination ZIP decides whether the fee applies. Weight, size and service level don't change the amount.
  • It applies automatically. UPS adds it when the label is created. There's no opt-out.
  • It applies to pickups too. UPS charges the same area surcharges on On-Call Pickups from listed ZIP codes.
  • UPS doesn't notify you when a ZIP is added. A customer you've shipped to for years can start costing more after a list update.

On a UPS invoice, DAS appears as its own line under each affected package. A rural home delivery usually carries a second extra line too: the residential surcharge, which UPS charges on every delivery to a home. UPS adds its peak-season demand surcharges on top of both.

Most of these rise by about 9% on December 21. UPS's average Daily Rates increase on the same date is 5.9%, so area surcharges are growing faster than base rates.

What's the Difference Between DAS, Extended DAS and the Remote Area Surcharge?

Extended DAS covers harder-to-reach ZIPs at $5.70 commercial or $8.85 residential. The Remote Area Surcharge costs $16.50 in the 48 states.

UPS puts every surcharged ZIP code into one tier. On the current list, effective December 21, 2025:

  • Standard DAS: 7,625 ZIP codes in suburban and lightly served parts of the 48 states.
  • Extended DAS: 14,275 ZIP codes covering smaller towns and rural routes in the 48 states.
  • Remote Area Surcharge: 3,591 ZIP codes in the 48 states, plus 219 in Alaska and 68 in Hawaii.

Extended has almost twice as many ZIP codes as standard DAS. So if a customer's ZIP is surcharged at all, the more expensive Extended rate is the most likely one.

No ZIP code appears in more than one tier, so a package only ever pays one of these fees. The UPS Remote Area Surcharge is roughly double the Extended residential rate in the 48 states. It also applies to UPS Simple Rate, which is exempt from the other two tiers.

How to Look Up UPS Delivery Area Surcharge ZIP Codes

Download the Delivery and Remote Area Surcharge Listing from UPS's Zones and Rates page and search your ZIP. The list changes on December 21, 2026.

To check a ZIP code:

  1. Go to UPS's Shipping Zones and Rates page (ups.com, then Support, Shipping Support, Shipping Costs and Rates).
  2. Under Additional Rate and Surcharge Guides, download the Delivery and Remote Area Surcharge Listing. It's an Excel file and doesn't ask for a ZIP code.
  3. Open the file. It has five tabs: US 48 Zip (standard DAS), US 48 Zip DAS Extended, Remote US 48 Zip, Remote AK Zip and Remote HI Zip.
  4. Search the whole workbook for the destination ZIP code (Ctrl+F or Cmd+F, then set "Within" to Workbook). The ZIP codes sit in a grid across many columns, so scrolling one column won't find them.
  5. Drop any leading zero before you search. UPS stores ZIP codes as numbers, so 01002 appears as 1002. Searching "01002" returns nothing, which matters for New England, New Jersey and Puerto Rico ZIP codes.
  6. Note the tab the ZIP appears on. That's its tier. If it's on none of the five tabs, UPS doesn't charge an area surcharge there.
  7. Check whether the address is residential or commercial, because the fee is different for each.
  8. Download the file again after December 21, 2026. The current file is labelled "Effective December 21, 2025", and UPS replaces it on December 21, 2026. A ZIP that's clear today may be on the new list.

UPS can also add ZIP codes between annual updates. In April 2024, it added 82, including parts of New York, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Recheck your top destinations each time UPS publishes a new list.

How Much Does the Delivery Area Surcharge Cost Your Business?

For one package, DAS is the fee for its tier and address type. A home delivery to an Extended ZIP code costs $8.85 in DAS in 2026, about 20% of a $45 order. If you offer free shipping, you absorb that yourself.

To see your monthly cost, export 3 to 6 months of destination ZIP codes and address types, match them against the UPS listing, count packages per tier and multiply each count by its fee.

Worked Example: One Month

Take a brand shipping 1,500 UPS Ground parcels a month, all to homes. Say 255 of them (17%) go to surcharged ZIP codes: 180 standard DAS, 60 Extended and 15 Remote. This split is an example, so use your own numbers.

Tier Packages 2026 Fee 2026 Cost Fee From Dec 21 Cost From Dec 21
DAS, residential 180 $6.55 $1,179.00 $7.15 $1,287.00
Extended DAS, residential 60 $8.85 $531.00 $9.65 $579.00
Remote, 48 states 15 $16.50 $247.50 $18.00 $270.00
Total 255 $1,957.50 $2,136.00

That's $1,957.50 a month in DAS today and $2,136.00 from December 21. The rate change alone adds $178.50 a month, or $2,142 a year, without a single extra order.

Does UPS Charge the Delivery Area Surcharge on Top of Other Fees?

Yes. A rural home delivery pays DAS plus the $6.50 UPS Ground residential surcharge, and UPS adds its weekly fuel surcharge to both fees.

The charges that commonly sit alongside DAS on one rural home delivery:

  • Residential surcharge: $6.50 for Ground and $7.00 for Air in 2026, rising to $7.10 and $7.60 on December 21.
  • Fuel surcharge: a weekly percentage that UPS applies to the transportation charge and to area and residential surcharges.
  • Demand surcharge: $0.50 per Ground Residential package from October 25 to November 21, 2026, $0.75 from November 22 to December 26, and $0.50 again until January 16, 2027.

Do Other Carriers Charge a Delivery Area Surcharge?

Most national carriers charge some version of an area fee. The names and amounts differ.

FedEx charges a delivery area surcharge with the same three tiers as UPS: standard, Extended and Remote. In 2026 it's $4.45 commercial and $6.60 residential, rising to $4.70 and $7.00 on January 4, 2027.

DHL Express charges a Remote Area Surcharge on international shipments, priced per kilogram with a minimum per shipment. It can apply to the pickup address, the delivery address, or both.

USPS doesn't charge a separate area surcharge. It builds distance into its zone pricing instead. From April 26, 2026 to January 17, 2027, it also adds an 8% fuel surcharge on Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail and Ground Advantage, plus a temporary holiday price increase from October 4.

How Can You Reduce or Avoid the UPS Delivery Area Surcharge?

Three ways to pay less on surcharged ZIP codes:

Negotiate DAS in Your UPS Agreement

DAS is negotiable in a UPS contract, separate from your base rate discount. Bring 12 to 18 months of data: packages per tier, total DAS spend, and DAS as a share of your total shipping cost.

Use UPS Simple Rate Where Your Parcels Fit

UPS Simple Rate shipments don't pay standard or Extended DAS, or the residential surcharge. For small, light parcels going to surcharged ZIP codes, a Simple Rate box can remove up to $8.85 per package in DAS in 2026. The Remote Area Surcharge still applies. UPS Ground with Freight Pricing shipments are also exempt from DAS.

Compare UPS Rates on Easyship

DAS is set by UPS. Easyship can lower the UPS rate you pay before it's added.

With Easyship, you can compare Easyship's pre-negotiated UPS rates with the rates on your own UPS account, which you connect through Link Your Own Courier. If Easyship's UPS rates come in lower than your own contract rates, you can ship on those instead. DAS charges don't appear on the Easyship invoice.

FAQ

Is the UPS delivery area surcharge the same as the residential surcharge?

No. They're separate fees. The residential surcharge applies to every delivery to a home. DAS applies only when the ZIP code is on UPS's area surcharge list. A rural home delivery pays both.

Why is UPS charging me a delivery area surcharge?

Your package went to, or was picked up from, a ZIP code on UPS's Delivery and Remote Area Surcharge Listing. UPS charges extra for these areas because routes there cost more per stop.

Is the UPS delivery area surcharge charged per package or per shipment?

Per package for standard UPS shipments. UPS Hundredweight shipments pay it once per shipment instead, from $22.50 to $44.00 in 2026.

Does UPS charge a delivery area surcharge on Simple Rate?

No. UPS Simple Rate shipments are exempt from standard and Extended DAS and from the residential surcharge. The Remote Area Surcharge still applies.

Does UPS charge the delivery area surcharge on pickups?

Yes. UPS charges area surcharges on On-Call Pickups from listed ZIP codes, at the same amounts as deliveries. In 2026 that's $6.55 for a residential area and $8.85 for an extended residential area.
